Anthem Blog Prompts

Answer the following questions as you read the novel, using complete sentences and evidence from the text that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized. For each item of evidence, provide the page number in parentheses to indicate where it is located in the text.

Chapter 1 (Due Tuesday, 12/4):  Describe the society in which Anthem is set. Some areas to consider are the political structure, degree of technology use, social relationships, quality of life, and level of education.

Would you want to live in this society? Explain why or why not.

Chapter 2 (Due Wednesday, 12/5):  What word is Equality struggling to recapture on Page 49? In your opinion, why is mentioning this word the only crime punishable by death in this society? What could its rediscovery possibly lead to?

Chapters 3-6 (Due Thursday, 12/6):  Choose one of the following prompts for your response.

  • What does Equality discover? How important is this discovery to Equality? To the society in Anthem? Why?
  • Why is Equality so interested in seeing his own image at this point in the novel? What emotion is he feeling?
  • The old locks and lack of guards in the Palace of Corrective Detention indicate that prisoners never tried to escape. Why not?

Chapters 7-9 (Due Wednesday, 12/12):  Equality questions the morality of his former society. Contrast what he was previously taught about solitude, good, evil, and joy to what he now believes.

Chapters 10-12 (Due Thursday, 12/13):  Choose two quotes from these chapters that say the most in terms of a philosophy about life that you can believe in. Explain what they mean by using an example of how the quote might guide your behavior on any given day.
